What is Circumcision and What are Its Health Benefits

Circumcision is common in some cultures, especially in Africa and Asia. The procedure involves removing part or all of the foreskin from the penis. Most parents choose to circumcise their boys because they believe it will prevent them from contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Is circumcision essential?

Circumcision has been practiced since ancient times. In the United States, circumcision rates increased dramatically after World War II. Today, almost 90% of newborn males are circumcised.

There are several reasons why parents should consider circumcision. First, it prevents urinary tract infections, penile cancer, phimosis, balanitis, and other conditions. Second, it reduces the risk of HIV infection. Third, it helps prevent UTIs, penile cancers, and genital herpes. Fourth, it improves sexual function. Finally, it makes sex safer.

What are the benefits of Circumcision?

Circumcision is an expert subject matter and its benefits can only be enjoyed if it is performed by an expert. Therefore having it with a professional circumcision clinic in London can benefit you a lot and increase its effectiveness.

Reduce Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Circumcision is a surgical procedure in which the foreskin (skin covering the head of the penis) is removed. It has been for thousands of years, and its purpose is to protect against sexually transmitted diseases, such as HIV/AIDS.

The foreskin contains many nerve endings that help with sensation during intercourse. If you have never had an uncircumcised penis, you may not realize how sensitive your penis can be. Your partner’s vagina also contains nerve endings that can be felt when your penis touches her vagina.

When you remove the foreskin, this area becomes less sensitive. This means that if you do not use protection during sex, you could get an STD.

Protect Against Bacteria & Viruses

The foreskin also covers the opening of the urethra (the tube through which urine travels out of the body), so it protects the urethral opening from bacteria and viruses. An uncircumcised penis is more likely than a circumcised one to become infected with herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1). HSV-1 causes cold sores on the lips and genitals.

Lower Chances of Prostate Cancer

A study published in the Journal of Urology found that men who were circumcised before puberty had a lower incidence of prostate cancer than those who were not circumcised. A second study published in Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention found that male circumcision was associated with a decreased risk of prostate cancer.

Decreases The Risk of HPV

A third study published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior found that circumcised men were at a reduced risk of developing anal cancer compared to uncircumcised men.

In addition, there is evidence that suggests that circumcision decreases the risk of acquiring HPV (human papillomavirus) — a cause of cervical cancer. However, these studies did not show whether circumcision prevented HPV infection.

Lower urinary tract infections

The foreskin is made up mostly of mucus-producing cells. When bacteria from your mouth and genitals come into contact with this type of cell, they stick to it. This causes UTIs (urinary tract infections), which are very common among women.

Reduces risk of kidney problems

Kidney disease is a significant cause of death in the United States. Researchers believe that circumcision protects boys’ kidneys by reducing the urine produced by the foreskin.

How does circumcision work?

When a baby boy is born, his penis looks like a small piece of skin covered by a thin layer of tissue. As he grows older, the foreskin starts to thicken and darken. The foreskin develops folds called frenula. During adolescence, the foreskin begins to retract into the glans (head of the penis). By adulthood, the foreskin completely disappears.

Circumcision removes the foreskin without cutting off any part of the shaft or glans. It leaves only a tiny hole where the tip of the foreskin used to be.

What Happens After Circumcision?

Wound Healing

After circumcision, the new opening heals over within two weeks. Most doctors recommend waiting three to four days before having sexual activity. Call your doctor right away if you notice blood coming from the wound. They may want to examine the area for signs of infection.

Cleaning

You can wash the wound, as usual, using soap and water. Don’t use anything abrasive such as an astringent or antiseptic cream. These products could irritate the wound.

Soreness

You’ll probably have some soreness around the site of the surgery. Your doctor may prescribe pain medication if necessary.

Discomfort

It’s normal to experience some discomfort during sex. If you feel pain while having intercourse, stop immediately. Call your doctor if the pain continues. It’s important to avoid vigorous rubbing of the penis against clothing, bedding, or other objects. Doing so can increase friction on the wound and lead to more bleeding.

Conclusion

Circumcision has many research-backed benefits that make it more important from a medical point of view. However, it’s got some complications, but these are worth having.
