1. Astronaut

This is one of the most interesting jobs on this list because astronauts can explore outer space! If you’re a major science geek, this job is for you! NASA went on the search for their next batch of astronauts and had their open call for applications on Aug. 19, 2017.

Astronauts are responsible for conducting experiments, analyzing samples, and performing spacewalks in space. The requirements to become an astronaut are immense, but also very exciting (literally). You must have a bachelor’s degree in either engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics, as well as three years of relevant experience or at least 1,000 hours piloting a jet aircraft.

2. Computer / Software Engineer

If you’re a computer whiz and have an interest in computers, the software engineering field might be right up your alley. As a computer engineer, you’ll design information processing systems to meet the needs of both humans and machines. In addition to systems, you’ll take on tasks such as network design and writing code for new applications. To become a computer engineer, you’ll need to obtain at least a bachelor’s degree in computer science. Alternatively, you can study for an online Masters in Computer Science.

3. Dentist

Dentistry is one of the best careers out there because you can help people who are in pain regain their smiles! Are you good with kids? If so, this may be a great option for you because pediatric dentistry is one of the most sought-after specialties in dentistry! Becoming a dentist is by no means an easy feat, but it’s definitely something to consider if you like helping people and have the drive to keep learning more about dental hygiene throughout your career. To get started, all that’s required is an undergraduate degree in any field and four years of dental school. Unlike many other careers on this list, getting licensed by an exam isn’t required before taking residency for licensure.

4. Occupational Therapist

Occupational therapists help patients of all ages with issues that cause them to have difficulty with everyday life. Some examples of issues include aging, brain injuries, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, and mental illnesses. Anybody looking to work in this field must be extremely patient and empathetic because you will be working with people who have a very hard time functioning in the real world because of their conditions. To become an occupational therapist, you’ll need to obtain a master’s degree in occupational therapy.

5. Orthodontist

Have you ever had a root canal? That’s what orthodontists do! You’ll be able to help people feel comfortable smiling again after their teeth are forced out of alignment by braces and/or other types of orthodontic procedures. Becoming an orthodontist requires a four-year undergraduate degree and a four-year dental degree. In addition, you’ll need to be accepted into an accredited orthodontic program, which takes another two to three years. This career is definitely worth all that work, though, because it’s not only rewarding for patients but for orthodontists as well!

6. Pediatrician

Becoming a pediatrician is one of the most rewarding jobs in medicine because you’ll get to interact with children and their families daily. The field of pediatrics is always growing, which makes it a never-ending door to job opportunities. To become a pediatrician, you’ll need to obtain at least a bachelor’s degree in pediatrics and four years of relevant work experience. 

7. Registered Nurse

Do you like helping people? Nursing is an extremely diverse field, so this could be the perfect job for you! Registered nurses can work in a variety of facilities, including hospitals, home care clinics, schools, research labs, and more. To become a registered nurse (RN), all you’ll need is a two-year associate degree or certificate in nursing as well as passing the NCLEX exam. Once you’ve passed the exam and acquired your RN license, you’ll need to obtain some hands-on experience in your field of choice before becoming employed as an RN.

8. Statistician

Do you love data? Statisticians compile, organize, analyze, and interpret data in fields such as science, business, and health care. If you’re interested in working with numbers and statistics daily, this could be right up your alley! To become a statistician, you’ll need to obtain at least a bachelor’s degree in statistics or applied mathematics. There aren’t any certification requirements for statisticians in Canada; however, the Statistical Society for Canada offers two levels of accreditation, Professional Statistician (P.Stat) or Associate Statistician (A.Stat).

9. Biomedical Engineer

Did you know that 20% of biomedical engineers are women? This number is rising, so if you’re a girl interested in the medical field, keep on reading! To become a biomedical engineer, you’ll need to obtain at least a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering. You’ll also need to take various courses such as chemistry, biology, and computer science. Additionally, it’s advised that you either participate in a co-op program or an internship during your time as an undergraduate student. To become licensed by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveys (NCEES), which is necessary for practical work experience, you’ll need four years of relevant work experience or a master’s degree.

10. Biochemist

Biochemistry is the study of chemicals found in living organisms. Biochemists find ways to improve both human health and the environment by studying everything from amino acids to DNA. It’s not a job for everyone, but it’s definitely worth considering if you have an interest in chemistry and biology! To become a biochemist, you’ll need to obtain at least a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. In addition to taking courses such as college chemistry, biology, organic chemistry, and genetics, it’s recommended that you gain work experience through internships or a co-op program.

11. Immunologist

Have you ever had a severe allergy to an insect bite? Immunologists work to prevent reactions such as this. If you have strong scientific skills, you may be interested in this career because immunology requires the study of chemistry, biology, and applying the scientific method. To become an immunologist, you’ll need at least a bachelor’s degree in either microbiology, biology, or chemistry. 

12. Social Worker

If you’re interested in helping others, a career in social work could be right up your alley! Social workers are those who help people in any form through therapy, counseling, and education. They get their jobs through an education program that requires at least a bachelor’s degree in social work. You’ll also need to gain some work experience through an internship or a co-op program.

13. Pharmacist

If you have strong mathematical skills, becoming a pharmacist could be right up your alley! To become a pharmacist, you’ll need to obtain at least a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, or biology. You’ll also need to pass the National Board Examination through the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada. Finally, you must gain experience through an apprenticeship or internship program.

14. Physician’s Assistant

Do you love helping people? Physician’s assistants (P.A.s) work with physicians and surgeons to help patients in both hospital and outpatient settings. To become a P.A., all you’ll need is an undergraduate degree in any field of study as well as passing the national certifying examination through the Canadian Certified Physician Assistant (CCPA).

15. Registered Dietitian

Have you ever had to count calories every day to lose weight or maintain your current weight? Registered dietitians help plan healthy diets for people with conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and more. To become a registered dietitian, you’ll need to obtain at least a bachelor’s degree in dietetics. 

16. Veterinary Technician

Working with animals may be just what you’re looking for in your career! Veterinary technicians help veterinarians perform medical procedures and care for animals not only during their stay at a veterinary hospital but also as they go home with their owners. To become a veterinary technician, all you’ll need is an associate degree in animal health technology or veterinary technology.

A common characteristic with most of these careers is the need for individuals to interact.
