Wife’s Rights in Islam

Islam has prescribed upon the husband responsibilities towards his wife. Before the arrival of Hazrat Muhammad SAW and the unveiling of Islam, Arab society was ignorant. Not only in the Arab society, but in the whole world too, people were using wives as a toy. That’s why when Islam arrived in Makkah, Prophet Muhammad SAW took the matter in his hand to enlighten the ignorant people of Arab. Along with his other’s teaching, he preached and prompted people to do good with their wives and take care of their rights.

For your guidance, we will highlight the wife’s right in the light of Islam. So please read the article till the end and get benefits from it.

Financial Rights:

To understand the financial rights of the wife, we will divide this topic into three more topics, i.e., Mahr, Spending on wife, and place for living

Mahr:

Allah SWT has explicitly defined the financial rights of the wives in Quran. In surah al-Nisa, verse no.4 Allah says;

“And give the women (with whom you marry) their Mahr (obligatory bridal money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage) with a good heart.”

As we can see, it is not a kind of favor to give money to a wife at the time of marriage, but it is compulsory and is the order of Allah SWT.

Spending money on wife:

Another aspect of the wife’s financial rights is that a husband needs to spend as much money on his wife as he can. In Quran Shareed, Surah Talaq, verse no. 7, Allah says;

“Let the rich man spend according to his means; and the man whose resources are restricted, let him spend according to what Allah has given him.”

So, in a nutshell, those who have great wealth and money need to spend more money and wealth on his wife because it is the order in Quran.  Get the idea from, Quran Reading Course.

Similarly, at one instance, Hind bint Utbah – the wife of Abu Sufyan – asked Nabi Kareem SAW about her husband’s wealth. She said, ” Abu Sufyan is a miserly man, and I need to take some money of his wealth.” The Prophet Muhammad SAW said, “Take reasonably what is sufficient for you and your children.” [Bukahri]

So, on a lighter note, if someone’s husband is ungenerous and stingy, the wife can take money from his wealth for her husband and herself.

A living place:

It is our third part of financial rights. It is the husband’s responsibility to take care of the accommodation of his wife. To provide a peaceful living place to his wife and take care of her bread and clothes. In surah Baqarah, verse no. 233, Allah SWT says;

“But the father of the child shall bear the cost of the mother’s food and clothing on a reasonable basis.”

It is also the husband’s responsibility to provide a separate home to his wife. He is obliged to do so. If he is poor, then he is not bound.

General Rights/Moral and ethical:

The general rights of a wife are as obligatory as financial rights. In fact, the general rights are more obligatory to fulfill them; one doesn’t need to be rich enough. The Messenger of Allah said, “Be kind to women (wives). [Bukahri 3153, Muslim 1468]

In another Hadith, the Prophet Muhammad SAW said, “You never spend anything, but you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel of food that you lift to your wife’s mouth.” [Bukhari 6352, Muslim 1628]

Conclusion:

We can conclude that Islam has defined wife’s rights on every occasion. In both Quran and Hadiths, there are several verses and quotes about the rights of the wife. As-Salat is an obligatory prayer; similarly, fulfilling the rights of a wife is also obligatory. May Allah SWT helps us perform our duty and earn the reward in Dunya and akhirah. Ameen
